Paris’s second vineyard

The topography of Paris is dominated by two hills, Montmartre and Buttes-Chaumont.  Montmartre has a vineyard, which we covered in an earlier post.  And just next to Buttes-Chaumont is a little hill, Butte Bergeyre, which also has a vineyard.  La butte Bergeyre is a mini district of the 19th arrondissement of Paris, peaking at 100 metres. It may not be spectacular, but it has cachet in that virtually no Parisians have heard of it.  When the harvest takes place, it is a neighbourhood community festival.

Butte Bergeyre may be one of the world’s smallest vineyards.  It only produces around one hundred and thirty 50cl bottles a year.  And it is quite a challenge to get there, climbing up and down lots of stairs.  But as we say in French, “il a le mérite d’exister”.  See Montmartre in the background of the last photo.
