Delicious dahl curry

Once upon a time, France earned the title of the “eldest daughter of the Church.” This reflects the profound and intertwined history of France with Christianity, a relationship that has left an indelible mark on culture, politics, and spirituality, both in Europe and worldwide.

What’s more, during the period from 1309 to 1376 seven successive popes resided in Avignon rather than in Rome (“the Avignon Papacy”).  The situation arose from the conflict between the papacy and the French crown, culminating in the death of Pope Boniface VIII after his arrest and maltreatment by agents of Philip IV of France.

But today, many French churches are empty, as the Catholic faith is a fading phenomenon.  However, one positive trend is that Filipino migrants are resuscitating the church with their devotion.

Three years ago, when our maid (Anne) arrived in Paris, I took her to Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church for mass.  The priest was Irish, and virtually the whole congregation was Filipino.

I could understand the priest’s Irish accent, and I am sure that the Filipinos could not either.  But no-one seemed to care.  For Filipinos going to mass is as much a social occasion where you can meet your compatriots.

Last Sunday, we went back to Saint Joseph’s for a farewell mass.  Again there was an Irish priest who almost spoke English.  And the congregation was overflowing with parishioners.  Among the pleasant surprises was meeting my former colleague and friend Collette Goldstein.

There are two new developments I could observe.  Outside the church several Filipinos had seemingly set up a village market where they could sell their wares while the mass was underway.

And among the parishioners was a number of people from India and Africa.  I chatted to some of the Indians who were in Paris on IT work assignments.  With the French still obsessed with philosophy and culture, Indians are necessary to move France into the digital age.

And after mass a lunch was offered under the church, based on food prepared by some of the parishioners.  It was there that I was able to enjoy some delicious dahl.  I ate two portions!  It was almost enough to restore my faith.  See the photo of the lady who prepared the dahl!
