Bordeaux’s wine museums
The Cité du Vin which opened in 2016 is the world’s largest wine museum. It is a spectacular modern building which livens up the waterfront of Bordeaux. Most interestingly, it celebrates the world history of wine civilisation, not just France.
One stunning exhibition was the “Vineyards from the skies” which takes you on a flight over the vineyards of the world, including Adelaide Hills. Among the many other permanent exhibitions are wine planets, winegrowers and terroirs, six wine families, and the gallery of civilisations.
If you visit, take the lift to the top floor, and enjoy an excellent view of Bordeaux city with a glass of wine. The floor below has a very good restaurant where I enjoyed lunch. On the day of my visit, the Cité du Vin also had an excellent Picasso exhibition.
The Musée du Vin et du Négoce de Bordeaux is also very much worth a visit. It offers interesting information on the history of Bordeaux’s wine industry. I learnt much about Bordeaux’s close linkages with England, Ireland and the Netherlands.
