Who could resist Bouzy?
The village of Bouzy, in Champagne, is irresistible for us Anglophones by virtue of its quirky name. It is also unique for its production of a very good still red wine (from Pinot Noir grapes), in addition to traditional Champagne. Bouzy is a nice little village with several Champagne houses. Being in the Montagne de Reims, its Champagne and still wines are almost entirely made from Pinot Noir.
The vineyards of Bouzy climb right up the Montagne de Reims. So I decided to walk up to the line where the vineyards finish and are met by the forest. It was a wonderful walk through the vines. Many workers were active, pruning the vines which are now very leafy, with bunches of grapes just taking form. I chatted with the viticulteurs along the way. They are all worried about the risk of stormy weather between now and harvest time. Winemaking is a precarious business, subject to the whims of mother nature.
