Burgundy and California to Paris
My hectic travel schedule was neatly calibrated such that I could be at our early May wine tasting.
As always, President Bob dug up four splendid wines from his remarkable cellar. We kicked off with two whites, one Burgundy and the other Californian. And then followed two Burgundy reds.
Here follows some plagiarised tasting notes:
1.Freeman « Ryo-Fu » Russian River Chardonnay California 2017
The 2017 Ryo-fu will be one of their longer-aging Chardonnays, based on its youthful character upon release. Medium straw in color, the wine has aromas of toasted coconut, bacon and some pleasant reductive notes. With some air, a floral and honey perfumed nose emerges. The palate has a ripe fruit presence with pear and apricot notes, all wound together with some of the highest acid they’ve seen in Ryo-fu.
2. Domaine Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet « Clos du Vieux Château » 2019
91 points Burghound This is similar to the nose of the straight Puligny but is a bit riper and more floral infused. The rich and caressing medium-bodied flavors possess more punch as well as slightly better length on the citrusy, dry and focused finale.
3. Domaine FaiveleyLatricières-Chambertin Grand Cru 2005.
95 points Burghound A very deftly, indeed almost invisibly oaked nose sets off the elegant earth and iron-infused red berry fruit aromas and mineral-infused, pure, understated and wonderfully vibrant flavors that are built on a base of minerality and possess superb finishing detail on the structured and hugely long finish. This is a wine for the patient and will easily last 25+ years.
4. Domaine TrapetPere et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin "Ostrea" 2005
90 points Burghound with dark berry fruit and underbrush aromas that can also be found on the round, supple and nicely detailed middle weight flavors underpinned by fine tannins on the wonderfully long and dusty finish.
